4 bazi bazaars in town for green fireworks

Calcutta: this year, there will be four bazi bazaars in the city and 68 others in the rest of Bengal, focusing exclusively on selling green fireworks. However, environmental activists have raised concerns about the widespread availability in the market of unauthorized, conventional, high-decibel, smoke-emitting non-green fireworks. These unauthorized items are being traded openly, suggesting that high noise and air pollution could continue to be a significant problem this holiday season.
The government has authorized 72 bazi bazaars or fireworks markets to promote and sell only green fireworks across the state. But the manufacture and sale of banned conventional fireworks, which are 30% more polluting and noisier, has become widespread. “Most of these firecrackers are often sold openly, which leaves a big question mark over the seriousness of law enforcement authorities. It would be an exercise in futility if we cannot stop making such illegal fireworks at the source,” said Naba Dutta of Sabuj Mancha, who is fighting hard for a total ban on fireworks during Diwali and other festivities.
“In Kolkata, four bazi bazaars will be held at Tala Park, Maidan, Tollygunge and Behala. In Howrah city, there will be two bazi bazaars. All 3,200 green fireworks sellers have valid licenses to sell green fireworks. We will also ensure against illegal trade in conventional fireworks,” said Babla Roy, president of Sara Bangla Atasbaji Unnayan Samiti.
According to NEERI, green fireworks have a reduced shell and are made of fewer raw materials and additives. However, environmentalists said the 30% reduction in pollution is not enough for a marked improvement in the environment during Diwali night. “The number of fireworks going off is so high that a 30% reduction may not make any difference,” said Naba Datta.
