The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday launched an investigation into the attacks on the central office of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) at Mangalagiri in Guntur and the residence of party president N Chandrababu Naidu in Undavalli in Amaravati, allegedly by the YSR Congress party. leaders and executives, in 2021, when he was leader of the opposition, people familiar with the matter said.

State Director General of Police Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao on Saturday issued orders directing Additional Director General of the CID Ravi Shankar Ayyannar to take over the investigation into the two high-profile cases. He asked the CID chief to deploy special agents to thoroughly investigate each case.

In 2021, the attack on Naidu’s residence took place on 17 September and the TDP central office was vandalized on 19 October. The case relating to the attack on Naidu’s residence in Undavalli was registered by the Tadepalli police. The case relating to the attack on the TDP office was being investigated by the Mangalagiri police.

In both cases, YSRCP leaders and their supporters were charged with multiple counts, including criminal trespass, theft, attempted murder, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.

The Tadepalli police have named senior YSRCP leader and former minister Jogi Ramesh, along with his supporters, in connection with the attack on Naidu’s residence.

Similarly, Mangalagiri police registered cases against 110 people, including former Bapatla MP Nandigam Suresh, MLCs Lella Appireddy and Talasila Raghuram, former MP Devineni Avinash and YSRCP general secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, for allegedly attacking the TDP office.

In fact, police arrested Nandigam Suresh on September 5 in connection with the case, but the state High Court granted him bail on October 4. Other leaders also obtained an exemption from arrest from the court until October 21.

“CID authorities are gathering case diaries, evidence, CCTV footage, statements and other documents related to the two cases as part of the investigation,” said a senior CID official on condition of anonymity.

Although the police registered cases in both cases in 2021 itself, the investigation did not progress until the YSRCP lost power to the TDP-led National Democratic Alliance in June this year.

“Though the police have notified the accused and questioned senior leaders like Nandigam Suresh, Jogi Ramesh, Lella Appi Reddy and Devineni Avinash, the investigation has not made much progress. The government has therefore decided to hand over the matter to the CID,” the police officials quoted above said.
