Police are being asked to investigate the death of a British woman in a Spanish coastal town.

Pia Hokkanen fell from a second floor communal window on her 50th birthday while staying at her sister’s apartment in Torrevieja, Alicante for three days.

Ms Hokkanen fell on a neighbor’s garden terrace shortly after midnight on September 4, in what Spanish police said was probably suicide.

On the night of her death, Ms Hokkanen had fallen out with her boyfriend of seven years, Eugene Doris, 42, who left the apartment for a hostel four hours before her fatal fall.

He told the Guardian he was informed by the Guardia Civil that his partner had died almost a day after he left.

Denying that Ms Hokkanen was suicidal, Mr Doris likened her sudden death to something out of Final Destination – a 2000 horror film in which survivors of an air disaster die in a series of random accidents.

He said: “I think the police are still, yes, the police are still investigating. I think I need to liaise with them, as well as some lawyers. It’s possible it was an accident. It was probably an accident, yeah, that’s what I think.

Adding that he was seeking to convince Spanish lawyers to put pressure on the police to investigate the evidence further, he suggested it might be “useful to involve the Metropolitan Police”.

Ms Hokkanen, who held both British and Finnish citizenship and had lived in Britain for 25 years, had planned a birthday party in London three days later.

She was also looking forward to returning to Spain for another vacation in October.

She and Mr Doris had enjoyed a wine tasting the day she was later discovered by a neighbor who heard her hit the ground.

The Visa product manager was found wearing only panties, a T-shirt and a single slipper, the counterpart of which was discovered pointing towards the window from which she fell.

At the time of the fatal incident, she appeared to be holding open a toiletry bag whose contents were scattered on the floor of the apartment, including lipstick, a toothbrush, a cotton swab and eyeliner.

Some friends of Ms Hokkanen expressed concern that the Guardia Civil had reached the conclusion that she had committed suicide without taking into account other evidence, such as examining CCTV footage from neighboring properties, analyzing messages on his two phones and questioning potential witnesses.

Enrique Puerto, 44, who has known Ms Hokkanen for 20 years, said: “If you are not a resident and you are a foreigner, you become like a statistic – case closed.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “On Saturday September 7, the Met was informed of an ongoing investigation into the death of a 50-year-old dual British national in Torrevieja, Spain.

The role of “agents” in such cases is limited to facilitating communication between foreign authorities and anyone here in London who believes they have relevant information to share.

“The information has now been shared with the Spanish authorities responsible for this matter. It will be up to them to determine whether additional measures may be necessary.
