1 killed, several injured in shooting near Tennessee State University

One person was killed and at least nine others injured in a shooting just blocks from the Tennessee State University campus in Nashville Saturday evening, authorities said.

The deceased was a 24-year-old man and at least three of the injured are under the age of 18, Nashville police said in a social media post. None of the people involved in the shooting have been identified.

At a press briefing Saturday evening, Nashville police spokeswoman Brooke Reese said five of the victims were transported by ambulance to local hospitals and five others were dropped off in private vehicles.

“At this point, it has been confirmed that 10 victims were involved in this shooting, one of whom is deceased,” Reese told reporters.

Some of those being treated at area hospitals “are also suspected of being involved in the shootings,” Reese added.

Nashville Fire Department spokeswoman Kendra Loney added that the nine people injured were believed to have suffered gunshot wounds.

According to the Tennessean newspaper, the university sent a text message alert to students at 5:30 p.m. local time, warning them that there was an active shooter off campus. The exact circumstances of the shooting and what led to it remain unclear.

This happened as TSU celebrated homecoming festivities this weekend, CBS affiliate WTVF reports.

Nashville Fire Department personnel were already in the area because they were participating in an NSU homecoming parade, Loney said.

“At the time the shots rang out, our crews were there where it happened,” Loney said.

Loney noted that several firefighters initially thought the gunshots were fireworks because they had been set off earlier as part of the school’s festivities.

“Our staff have told me about times where they ripped off their belts and did things like use them as tourniquets, because they didn’t have their medical kit with them,” Loney said.

It was not immediately known if any suspects have been arrested. The identity of the person killed was also not provided.
